Florida City Gas Donates $20,000 To The American Red CrossDecember 20, 2005
MIAMI, Fla. – Dec. 20, 2005 – Florida City Gas, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based AGL Resources (NYSE: ATG), today donated $20,000 to the American Red Cross of Greater Miami & The Keys to assist with hurricane and other disaster relief.
Presenting the donation check to Sam Tidwell, CEO of the American Red Cross of Greater Miami & The Keys, during a holiday luncheon for employees at the Florida City Gas Hialeah office, Charles Rawson, vice president and general manager of Florida City Gas said, “This past year’s hurricane season was and continues to be a real challenge for the South Florida area.
“Although we temporarily lost phone service as a result of the storms, our crews were able to quickly repair almost 50 line breaks damaged by uprooted trees,” Rawson added. “This was a small undertaking compared with all the hard work the Red Cross continues to do to rebuild lives and communities devastated by the recent storms and other disasters.”
Tidwell said, “The generosity of companies like Florida City Gas especially during the holiday season is of tremendous help to the American Red Cross. We are stretched thin this time of year as we continue our work to provide victims of the storms and local disasters with emergency food, clothing, shelter, and other necessities.”
A company-wide fundraising campaign got underway at AGL Resources immediately following Hurricane Katrina and continued after Hurricane Rita. To date, approximately $450,000 has been raised from employees, retirees and the AGL Resources Private Foundation. In addition to helping the American Red Cross in Florida, these funds will be used to help rebuild schools in Erath, La, a community center in New Orleans and to assist other American Red Cross and United Way hurricane relief efforts along the Gulf Coast.
Florida City Gas in February donated $45,000 to the Miami-Dade Community Foundation and in June donated $30,000 to the Brevard Community Foundation along with forming a Community Advisory Council to identify and support environmental non-profit organizations in the area. Representative Mitch Needelman (District 31), Gary Lang, president of the Brevard Community Foundation, and Rawson serve on the council.
“Coordinating grants through these foundations allows us to extend the reach of our donations and target organizations in South Florida where we can do the most good,” said Rawson.
Organizations that benefited from the Florida City Gas 2005 donations to the Miami-Dade and Brevard community foundations include:
- Friends of the Turkey Creek, $10,000 for signs for boaters, a pavilion and a new canoe launch site at Turkey Creek Sanctuary;
- Marine Resources Council, $10,000 to purchase 200 mangrove plants for the shoreline restoration program along the Indian River lagoon;
- The Yaeger Foundation Inc., $5,000 for healthcare programs;
- Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium, $5,000;
- IT Women, $5,000 for information technology career programs for women;
- CAP Inc. (College Assistance Program), $5,000 to provide tuition assistance to Miami-Dade students;
