Request an Excess Flow Valve Installation

Florida City Gas maintains a network of natural gas mains and service pipelines that deliver safe and reliable natural gas to communities in our service areas.

To enhance the safety of your natural gas service, an excess flow valve (EFV) may be installed inside the natural gas distribution service line between the street and your meter. If there is a significant increase in the flow of gas (i.e., due to a damaged line), the EFV will trip, or close, to minimize the flow of gas through the service line. Once the line is repaired, the correct pressure will be restored, and the EFV will automatically reset itself.

If you’d like information about having an EFV installed on your service line, please call 800.993.7546.

How an EFV Works

An EFV is designed to automatically shut off natural gas flow if a service line is ruptured. One example of how that may occur is a service line gets dug up accidentally during a construction project. If the gas line becomes damaged, the EFV would restrict gas flow to potentially minimize property damage and/or injury.

EFV Limitations

Installing an EFV will not protect against leaks on customer appliances or house piping. EFVs also do not protect against leaks on the gas meter or slow leaks on the service line.

EFV Installation Cost

To have an EFV installed on the natural gas service line, the customer cost is typically $1,000. The final cost may vary, depending on installation difficulty. This charge will be sent as a separate bill to your billing address for the installation (not as part of your monthly Florida City Gas bill).

Scheduling an EFV Installation

The installation of an EFV will be scheduled at a mutually agreeable date, pending the approval of any required permits and weather conditions. An EFV is designed to last the lifetime of the natural gas line, but costs may be incurred for maintaining or replacing an EFV at a later date.

To avoid tripping the EFV, call Florida City Gas at 800.993.7546 if upgrading or adding gas equipment that may significantly increase your gas usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, EFVs are not required on existing natural gas service pipelines. The pipelines serving your community are already safe.

However, federal code changes require that we let customers know about this supplemental device. Much like a backup camera in a newer car model, an EFV is an enhancement to your already safe natural gas service pipeline.

If you own a single-family home built before 2000, it is likely that you do not have an EFV installed. If you’d like information about having an EFV installed on your service link, complete our request form or call 800.993.7546.

Sometimes, an EFV cannot be installed due to system operating characteristics. If this is the case, we’ll let you know.

Yes, the average installation cost is $1,000. The final expense may vary, depending on installation difficulty. Customers are responsible for this expense. You will receive a separate bill to the billing address provided for the installation (not as part of your monthly Florida City Gas bill).

If the new equipment will drastically increase your natural gas usage, notify Florida City Gas at 800.993.7546. This step may help prevent accidentally tripping the EFV.
