Safety Town in DeBary, Florida

Hands-on training for safer communities.

At Florida City Gas, safety is our top priority. From service connections to proactive pipeline maintenance, safety is at the forefront of everything we do. That commitment is what led to Safety Town, a training facility in Debary, Florida, located in our sister company Florida Public Utilities’ service territory.

The facility features training classrooms, equipment storage and shed-style homes. These structures simulate the residential settings where our employees work every day.

Safety Town offers hands-on safety briefings for the employees and contractors who build, maintain and operate our energy systems. We also provide free training for first responders, giving them the chance to become familiar with natural gas and the equipment used to deliver it to homes and businesses.

Covering approximately one acre, the Safety Town training center in DeBary, Florida, opened in 2025. It was inspired by Chesapeake Utilities’ Safety Town in Dover, Delaware. Both facilities allow participants to practice technical skills, emergency response and safety protocols in lifelike settings before they’re needed in the field.

What Training Topics are Covered?

DeBary’s Safety Town delivers learning experiences that blend classroom instruction with hands-on field exercises.

  • Emergency response coordination
  • Main installation, repair and maintenance
  • Underground utility line locating and excavation safety
  • Infrastructure integrity inspections
  • Valve recognition and operation
  • Meter and regulating station
  • Meter installation and repairs
  • Propane tank training

The DeBary facility also uses simulations so participants can practice responding to line strikes and gas leaks, complete service connections, locate underground utilities, detect leaks and monitor corrosion.

As the industry evolves, our training offerings do too, ensuring our team stays ahead in safety, performance and technical expertise.

Who Does Safety Town Serve?

Safety Town supports the safety of our employees, first responders and communities.

Our operations teams use the site to sharpen technical skills, reinforce safe work habits and prepare for the types of emergencies they may encounter on the job.

First responders—including fire, EMS and law enforcement—train at Safety Town to strengthen coordination, align response strategies and build strong working relationships before an emergency occurs.

Together, these efforts help us better protect the communities we proudly serve.

Why Safety Training is Important

Learning about natural gas systems and equipment in a proactive, controlled environment is more effective than trying to learn during a real emergency. Training ahead of time allows participants to absorb information, practice skills and ask questions without the stress and urgency of a live incident.

The program also plays an important role in building strong partnerships between energy professionals and emergency responders. At the end, all parties have a clear understanding of their responsibilities—and how their roles work together.

By offering realistic, hands-on training environments, our Safety Town facilities help ensure our teams are ready to respond to emergencies, maintain critical infrastructure and carry out their work safely and efficiently.

The outcome is a more prepared workforce and a safer, more resilient community.
